Sustainability Policy

Sustainability Is Our Policy

Since the beginning of FLEGT licencing in 2003, Indonesia has sent billions of pounds' worth of confirmed legal timber to the EU.

Since every piece of teak wood used to make our furniture has a FLEGT licence, you can be sure that the wood was gathered, processed, and shipped in compliance with local legislation.

The first exporting nation to require its timber to meet specific legal requirements before it can be exported is Indonesia. Therefore, the FLEGT licence is a regulatory strategy to stop illicit logging.

The EU came up with FLEGT in 2003 in response to the Ministerial Conference on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance that took place in Bali in 2001. At that conference, the participating nations committed to working together to combat illicit logging, the illicit trade that goes along with it, and corruption, as well as to uphold the rule of law in relation to these matters. Regarding FLEGT implementation, the EU created an Action Plan to stop timber sourced illegally from entering the EU and to support partner nations', private sector's, and financial institutions' initiatives and policies to create systems that only permit legally produced timber to enter the market.

Production forests on Java have evolved into intensively and strictly managed plantations. Management of these lands (4.9 million acres of plantations in 54 forest management districts, mostly in teak) is undertaken directly by the state, through the State Forestry Corporation (SFC), Perum Perhutani.

These sustainable plantations are managed & owned and by the government who have a strict policy regarding the size, age, and number of trees felled each year, together with a comprehensive, sustainable replanting program. They assure the sustainability and legality of their teak through SVLK certification.

We have SVLK certification (allowing our furniture to be sold in confidence throughout the world) and are firmly committed to the values of equal opportunity and corporate social responsibility – through the continuing professional development and the skills and wellbeing of our staff. ALL our teak furniture is checked and issued with SVLK certification to confirm that it has been legally harvested and can be sold in any EU country. EU Timber Regulations (EUTR) 995/2010 prohibit illegally harvested timber and timber-based products from being sold onto European markets.

We are firmly committed to the values of equal opportunity and corporate social responsibility – through the continuing professional development and the skills and wellbeing of our staff.
